How to decorate your small garden

Posted by Sam on

Small gardens, terraces and courtyard patios require a little more thought when it comes to designing due to limited space. The space you do have must be used wisely to achieve that outdoor space you want. Even the tiniest outdoor space can be transformed into a retreat with a small amount of planning. We’ve come up with some tips to help you transform your small garden.

1. Add levels – by adding extra levels using decking can create an illusion of more space.
2. Shelving and hooks – add shelving and hooks so you can place trinkets and decorative items.
3. Vertical planting – you can hang flower pots vertically to create a colourful feature, this will be much more eye pleasing than a plain wall or fence.
4. Alfresco dining – just because you have a small outdoor space, don’t let it stop you from enjoying food in your garden. You can pick up small 2 person tables.
5. Pallet furniture – if you have a courtyard garden you can build clever corner seating using pallets – this will use your space efficiently and the high back sofa design can hide unsightly walls.

Maintenance of your greenhouse during the cold weather

Maintaining a greenhouse takes a lot of work and this increases during the colder months as monitoring the internal environment becomes even more important.

Your greenhouses internal environment should be kept the same all year round, so some extra input may be required maintain an equilibrium. You must monitor and record the internal temperature of your greenhouse each day at set intervals to make sure you have a true idea of what you need to change. If your greenhouse is too cold, plants will begin to die. So you may need to add a heater to keep the temperature up. That said, ventilation always remains important, but opening vents may cause a further drop in temperature, so make sure your vents are open as small as possible to provide adequate air circulation but not to alter the temperature.

You may find an increase in slugs and snails trying to enter your greenhouse during these cold months, so make sure you have repellent to keep them at bay.

Keeping your garden grass green

Posted by Sam on
Keeping your garden grass green

Maintaining a green grass can be one of the most frustrating aspects of gardening. With warmer days and less rainfall, grass can easily dry out and become discoloured and unattractive. There are two factors that contribute to your lawns growth; sunlight and water. Both factors are as important as each other, however too much or too little of each can affect your grass growth and colour.

If your lawn has patchy areas, where the grass has completely gone, try adding grass seeds and let them embed into the soil and start growing. Water your lawn daily if there has been no rainfall, remembering not to drown the grass, as too much water is not good for its growth.

If you feel your lawn is too worn and isn’t able to be saved, you may want to consider stripping the ground and getting new turf laid. New turf can give your garden a fresh start, and you can manage the lawn easier than before.

Looking to start your own greenhouse system in your garden?

Posted by Sam on

If you love tending to your plants, but find that this is only possible during the spring and summer time, you may want to consider having your own greenhouse.

A greenhouse simply allows you to grow plants and crops all year round. Keeping and growing plants effectively in a greenhouse, can take some time to get right, one of the most important factor is temperature control.

Keeping it warm- While the sun does a good job of keeping the interior of the greenhouse warm, as the sun goes down, the greenhouse may struggle to maintain a warm environment, vital for your plant life. It is recommended that you install a heating system, possibly an oil heater or overhead heat lamps that can radiate heat onto the crops.

Pest control- There is nothing worse than having your plants growing really well, just to have pests come along and ruin them. Pest control is very important, and you can reduce the risk of them by keeping all tools and pots clean. Using an insect killing soap is useful, as long as it is safe for your plants. Another great tip is to check any new plants for bugs before taking them into the greenhouse.

Shade- While the sunlight is great for warming up the interior naturally, high amounts of direct sunlight to your plants can cause damage. Create shade with sheets to make sure your plant still absorbs some sunlight, but also gets time in the shade too.

Temperature- as we have previously mention, the greenhouses interior is meant to be warm, however they can become too hot and begin to denature the plants, leading to them dying. Temperature can also be control with air vents, small adjustable vents that can control how much warm air can escape. Keep a thermometer in your greenhouse at all times, and monitor the readings at different intervals during the day, creating a continuous optimum environment for your plants to grow.
